Object Description
From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era metalwork. this pair of Japanese bronze and multi-metal vases covered with striking decoration of flowering lotus blossoms and seed pods among a patchwork of leaves.
The blossoms are highlighted in Silver, the seeds and insects in Gold and the decaying leaves, perhaps the most striking of all, in a bright scarlet red.
Signed Yukiyasu (Gyotai): As with many Japanese artists, exact details of Yukiyasu’s life have been lost to time, but it is believed he might have studied under Sugiura Yukimune, whose father worked for Suzuki Chokichi and the Kiryu Kosho Kaisha company. This is significant because the style of the particular red leaves here is a technique almost exclusively seen on Suzuki Chokichi’s work. So there is likely a link somewhere between Yukiyasu and Chokichi.
