Object Description

The good quality one piece ebonised shop display cabinet being glazed to all three sides, the carcass having a moulded cornice and plinth base, the original brass shop fitting handles opening to two shelves, the back showing the original parchment paper lining, the cupboard base with fielded panels opening to reveal a further shelf, the whole surviving from a department store in the Midlands and from the Edwardian period.

Object History

Formerly in a Department Store, Stoke, UK

Object Literature

This sizeable and well-made piece of furniture would have displayed a variety of wares in a large department store, probably that of jewellery or other relatively small items. The three-sided glazing allows clients to view the items without necessarily needing to take them out of the cabinet itself. This style of cabinet was very much the vogue of this period with the brass twin handles and ebonised finish.

A quality piece of shop fitting furniture and one that slides with ease into a modern interior.

Object Condition

The cabinet is in good overall condition with all components being original aside from the shelves, which are later replacements. The surface has the expected signs of wear to the ebonised finish to the extremities, for example to the top, with some light surface marks making for a decorative piece. The cornice has a small section of loss to one corner. She remains sturdy and we have given the piece a light polish to the ebonised finish. The lower section to the rear of the cabinet has had a replacement mdf backing added.
