A superb three quarter life size bronze tiger, The bronze body patinated to imitate the distinctive stripes of a tiger’s skin, with inset orange glass eyes. Signed in a seal tsunematsu. On a carved hardwood base.
Provenance: Mark: 常光作 Jōkō saku — also pronounced Tsunemitsu saku.
“This was a workshop in Tokyo, specialized in bronze casted elephants, tigers etc, made for export purposes around 1900.”
