The beautifully textured hanging plate rack of good size displaying the stunning original layers of time-worn paint in slate and turquoise greens, of naïve construction, and having fifteen compartments in total, nine smaller over and six larger under, with a bentwood cornice to sledge feet and likely surviving from the second quarter of nineteenth century Ireland.

Plate racks, also known as dish racks or dish drainers, have been around for a long time, with early examples dating back to the 1700s. These were often simple wooden structures designed to hold and drain freshly washed dishes. Vernacular plate racks, as functional and decorative elements in traditional kitchens, offer a glimpse into the domestic life of previous eras.
One won’t see a more charming or original plate rack; a unique piece of vernacular furniture which will elevate any kitchen space.
The provincially made carcass has a wonderfully textured patina, with a host of character commensurate with its age and use and it complete and undamaged.
