Object Description

A very fine Diamond Demi Fringe “Art Nouveau” Necklace in Platinum Tipped High Carat White Gold (tested 14ct) on an adjustable 18ct White Gold 20″ Chain (marked), making this a very versatile Diamond Necklace which may be worn at two different lengths. This beautiful Necklace comprises of five graduated and articulated “Art Nouveau” style “Old Cut” Diamond set links, with elements of Millegrain edging to the design, each with a “knife edge style double Diamond set drop, the five beautiful “Art Nouveau” open strapwork panels are in turn interspersed by four triple Diamond set articulated drops.

We assess that the Diamonds are all of “Good Commercial Colour and Reasonable Clarity” and we estimate that (unmounted) they would weigh approximately 2,50 Carats (unweighed).

It should be noted that 14ct White Gold (harder than 18ct and therefore more suitable for use in very delicate pieces) was occasionally used “on the Continent” during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s as an experimental medium to replicate the effects of the then relatively new and more expensive Platinum. Generally Platinum was rare and in very limited supply, consequently it was generally only used in the manufacture of heavier jewellery, with more substantial Diamond weight.

NB. The technology required to produce 18ct White Gold did not successfully evolve until after 1945.
