Object Literature

The original Warwick Vase is an ancient Roman marble vase decorated with Bacchic ornament that was discovered at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli around 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter-antiquarian and art dealer in Rome
The vase was found in the silt of a marshy pond at the low point of the villa’s extensive grounds, and although it was in need of repair it was sold to Sir William Hamilton, British envoy at the court of Naples, who commissioned James Byre and Giovanni Battista Piranesi to undertake the extensive restoration needed. Hamilton tried unsuccessfully to sell the repaired vase to the British Museum, and instead shipped the vase to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, who put it on display in the grounds of Warwick Castle.
