The very comfortable sanded beech frame of modular type form having undulating shaped arms, winged back and square tapering legs, the whole upholstered in a William Morris Forest velvet fabric with a forest green ground, depicting scrolling acanthus leaves, peacocks, hares and foxes amongst bunches of wild flowers inspired by the Forest Tapestry to tan leather piping, the whole surviving from the second quarter of the twentieth century.

William Morris’ use of birds and animals in his early tapestries is a forebear to his later carpet patterns. Morris placed great value on work and the joy of craftsmanship. His belief in the natural beauty of materials led him to learn and revive traditional skills such as natural dyeing, hand block printing and tapestry weaving. The fabric marries well with the rather more sexy and curvaceous Art Deco period here.
A chair that proves comfortable to the derrière and pleasing to the eye.
The chair remains in good overall condition, with the upholstery being nicely worn in the expected areas, the fade being to the seat and arms as photographed but not too far gone. It proves very comfortable. The upholstery is priced at £145 per meter.
