Object Description

From our collection of antique Japanese ceramics, this charming Meiji-era (1868-1912) plate with beautifully painted decoration of a bustling market scene.

Painted in a palette of Autumnal colours, each figure in this busy scene has their own unique character. You can almost hear the noise and chatter. The dish features street vendors, figures in conversation, playing and dancing as well as a background scene of Noble men and women playing games in an open-sided building. Each character is dressed in robes adorned with beautiful patterns and there is impressive moment to all the figures as it captures a snapshot in time.

The borders if the dish complement the busy central scene with a zig zag pattern of Kimono fabric designs and birds.

Signed Kozan to the reverse.
