Object Description
A Superb Quality And Extremely Rare American
19th Century Federal Period Mahogany Bowfront
Chest Having Superbly Figured Top Over Four
Long Drawers Retaining Original Brass Knobs
Flanked By Elegant Outstanding Turned Columns
With Carved And Reeded Decoration
Attributed to “Samuel Field McIntire, Salem, Massachusetts’
(Samuel Field McIntire who worked in Salem, at the start
of the early 19th century was the son of Samuel McIntire the
widely celebrated architect, carver and maker. He certainly
inherited his fathers carving skills and a little research
uncovers various examples of other furniture which also
feature the distinctive carving and reeded decoration
which is on show here. From a practical perspective this
chest of drawers retains an exceptional colour and surface
and it is a great size. The four drawers still run as beautifully
as the day it was made and it is therefore very much still
fit for its original purpose, as well as providing a touch
of elegance and class to any room of any property)
