Object Description

The beautifully un-meddled with painted pine carcass, of pedestal form and almost certainly estate made, retaining its original swan neck handle to the frieze drawer, with a fielded paneled lower cupboard door with ring handle and latch opening to reveal a shelf, the flanks also paneled, the whole with a superb bitumen patination, and surviving in original and unrestored condition from early George III period England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Finding an estate made Georgian period piece such as this in the original painted finish is always fantastic in its own right, and this example would work well as a lamp table, bedside table or hall table.

Gloriously Georgian and wonderfully original.

Object Condition

The base shows some attractive wear and tear with scuffing and losses commensurate with its age with the whole in largely original order and with the carcass structurally sound. The top shows a square recess where a workshop vice has been added at some stage. The bitumen craquelure is lovely with the piece probably having been near a fireside. The construction points to it being almost certainly made on an English country estate.
