Object Description
An adze cut Mouseman oak four legged stool, of rectangular form, the square section champfered legs joined by plain stretchers, one leg carved with a signature long-tailed mouse. English, circa 1930.
Footnote: Robert (Mouseman) Thompson (1876 – 1955), was a British furniture maker from Kilburn, North Yorkshire. He was inspired by the 1920 Arts and Crafts movement led by William Morris, John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle which promoted traditional craftsmanship and designs. Virtually every piece he made was carved with a mouse and tradition has it that his earlier pieces had the longest tails. His major commissions can be found in the Church of St Michael and All Angels, Hubberholme and Ampleforth College, North Yorkshire. The workshop, run by his descendants, continues to this day as “Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd – The Mouseman of Kilburn.”
