Object Description
From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) metalwork, this amusing pair of candlestick holders in the form of a Monkey and an Elephant.
The candlestick holders are finely cast and take on an unusual form. The Monkey using one as an ear trumpet whilst the Elephant greedily using the other as a funnel into his mouth. The Trunk of the elephant wrapped around the candlestick.
Although the animals themselves do not make an obvious pair, it is clear that they come from the same workshop (Seiya) and are part of the same series. They are clearly designed to be functional and provide levity to a space.
