Object Description

From our collection of antique Japanese metalware, this amusing and expressive Bronze Okimono depicting the tradition of Setsubun.

A male figure is depicted raising his hand high above his head and throwing Mamemaki (roasted Soy beans) on a cowering Oni.

Setsubun takes place at the beginning of February and is seen to mark the transition from Winter to Spring. The tradition of throwing beans is thought to help banish evil spirits (such as Oni) and ensure a good harvest.

The Okimono group is attached to a classic wooden and gilt Miyao base and is signed to the reverse.
