Form our collection of antique Japanese ceramics, this attractive pair of earthenware pottery Satsuma vases signed by Kizan and depicting idyllic wraparound scenes of figures on the shore of a lake.
Of traditional vase shape, this pair features a finely painted wrap continuous scene of men, women and children wearing opulent Kimono and robes while admiring plum blossom on the banks of a lake. Small huts are nestled among the trees and fishermen on white-sailed boats can be spotted in the distance against a backdrop of mountains and rolling hills.
What makes these vases even more impressive is that the scenes are not just continuous on each vase but across both vases. Another example of the wonderful imagination and talent of the Satsuma artists of the Meiji-era (1868-1912).
