Object Description

The weathered circular marble top over a wooden stabilising block supported by a shaped and painted cast iron base having naturalistic column with scrolled base to four padded feet, the whole with an attractive patination of rusting and wear to the black paint, surviving from the last quarter of nineteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Table such as this one were popular in high Victorian times particularly as tavern or pub tables though usually the tops are of cast iron, this marble top is a later addition but has weathered nicely to amalgamate the whole.

One can practically put this table in any interior or exterior situation and it will harmonise rather effortlessly.

Object Condition

The table is stable and in nice decorative condition, there are no major flaws or deficiencies to note. The wooden top is secured by screw fixings and the marble top simply sits on top of it so it is not fixed in place. The nice quality marble top is probably white carrara marble and has now been tinged an attractive slate colour and the cast iron both have a commensurate amount of rusted wear and weathering associated with exterior use.
