Object Description

The beautiful large half-length portrait in oval form of an early Georgian lady, painted in oils on canvas, wearing an intricate lace gown of gold, green and red, wearing no jewellery though with the dress bejewelled, her affable face looking out to the viewer with beautifully rendered blue eyes, her hair very much of the period, the work unframed and surviving from the second quarter of eighteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The sitter is obviously of a high station and her clothing is expensive and luxurious. There are no stamps or markings visible verso other thank a chalk number of ‘13’.

A beautifully executed portrait with a sartorial elegance.

Object Condition

She remains in completely original condition with no over-painting and a good deal of craquelure to the surface with very small flecked losses. The paint surface has taken on a wonderful patina to it and there has been no attempt to restore the picture though she may have been cleaned at some stage in the last decade with a light varnish. Please refer to the photographs for a full visual reference. We can provide the frame shown in one of the photographs if so desired though it is not original and probably early twentieth century in date.
