The oolitic limestone plinth column, almost certainly Bath stone, of country house estate origins, the cylindrical body to a circular socle and plinth square base, the whole beautifully weathered with age and surviving from the early nineteenth century.

Bath stone (from the Combe Down and Corsham area) often takes on this slightly chalky, pale-grey bloom in outdoor exposure and was used for Georgian and Victorian architecture, garden urns, columns, and statuary.
Able to be placed in or out, a classic staple of the English country house that would elevate any sculptural object.
The column has flaking to the stone as photographed; with salt damage to the magnesian limestone and historic chunks of loss to the socle and plinth base and chips to the top as photographed. There are five drilled holes to the top of the column where it would have held an urn via rods as its former incumbent.
