Object Description

The early nineteenth century English naïve school on woven card depicting a gentleman full length in profile and in period attire, gesturing with one hand and holding his top hat in the other, to a buff ground and shadowing to the foreground, the whole surviving from the late Regency to William IV period in un-meddled with condition.

Object Literature

The painting has similarities with the work of Richard Dighton (1795 -1880), who was an English artist in the Regency period, best known for his many satirical profile portraits.

A truly enchanting little oil.

Object Condition

The picture has not been restored or disturbed, with some damage to the top middle as photographed where he has been previously hung. The corners all show some slight loss and there is attractive craquelure to the surface. The reverse shows an attractive and interesting geometric pattern of green lozenges.
