An Early 20thC Bronze Figure of a Dancing Satyr or Pan c.1900-20

Object Description

The finely cast bronze figure depicting a dancing satyr, traditionally identified as Pan, shown balanced upon one leg whilst playing a pipe, the figure modelled in an animated pose with one knee raised, the head thrown back in movement and capturing the exuberance and revelry associated with the woodland deities of classical mythology, cast with expressive musculature and curling hair and retaining a naturally weathered verdigris patina acquired through age and exposure, the whole mounted upon an integral circular stepped socle base and surviving from the very early twentieth century.

Representations of Pan and satyrs have remained popular decorative motifs since the Renaissance, enjoying particular favour in late nineteenth and early twentieth century garden design. Their associations with music, nature and Bacchanalian celebration made them ideal subjects for fountains, statuary and architectural embellishments. This example possesses a lively sculptural quality and a convincing aged surface which lends it considerable decorative appeal.

A fine and evocative bronze suitable for display within a garden room, orangery or interior scheme and of suitable quality as a standalone sculpture.

Object Condition

Condition is commensurate with its intended outdoor use. The surface displays extensive weathering, oxidation and verdigris throughout, with areas of wear, minor losses and corrosion visible. The pipe section is possibly incomplete and there are signs of historic exposure to the elements, all of which contribute to the piece’s attractive antiqued appearance. There is a chance he may be formally part of a fountain element whilst the hands have filled holes to the bases of them indicating he was attached to a larger composition.
