Object Description

The rectangular shaped painted cast iron railway sign, in black capital lettering to an emerald green ground reading ‘Shut this gate’ in capital lettering, and surviving from the first quarter of twentieth century England.

The London and South Western Railway (LSWR, sometimes written L&SWR) was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. The LSWR became famous for its express passenger trains to Bournemouth and Weymouth, and to Devon and Cornwall. Nearer London it developed a dense suburban network and was pioneering in the introduction of a widespread suburban electrified passenger network.

In wonderfully original condition this is a stellar piece of decorative railwayana.

Object Condition

In original condition, the whole has not been re-painted or meddled with and the paint has flaked beautifully with age. There are four pierced holes for mounting purposes.
