The large country house ottoman having a padded hinged lid covered with a fragment of Turkish ottoman brocade, the whole with concave sides in a plush teal blue to lower rail and flattened bun feet, the seat lid opening to reveal a vacant storage interior and a pale linen lined interior, and the whole surviving from early Victorian period England.

Historians describe the ottoman’s origin as a low, wood platform on which cushions stack. In the Ottoman Empire, it was often the central piece of furniture in a room. The earliest evidence of the term’s usage was in France in 1729 as ‘ottomane’. But the word entered the English lexicon after Thomas Jefferson’s memorandum revealed his purchase of a velvet ‘ottomane’—probably an armchair—in 1789 during his Paris tour.
A true country house piece which delights in dwelling in its original charm.
The ottoman is sturdy and stable and there is no worm or major damages. She stands well and is ready for use with the hinges and lid working as it should. There is thinning to the top covering at the corners as photographed.
