Object Description

The early Victorian gothic revival wall cabinet, in stained pine, the moulded cornice over a heart and gothic arch astragal glazed door opening to reveal three shelves, the sides with lancet designs, and the whole surviving from the second quarter of nineteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

“A man who remains any length of time in a modern Gothic room, and escapes without being wounded by some minutiae, may consider himself extremely fortunate’”;
Augustus W. N. Pugin.

We have not seen heart motifs like these on a gothic piece before, and we love it.

Object Condition

The condition of the cabinet proves remains in nigh on the condition as when it was made, barring wear to the staining commensurate with age, and there is no key for the lock so that remains untested. Some of the glass may be later replacements. There is a nice patina to the stain to the sides especially.
