Object Description

From our collection of Japanese 19th and 20th Century fine art and antiques, this attractive, cauldron-form woven Bamboo basket dating from around 1920.

This basket is in the traditional Eastern style of the Iikuza / Tochigi prefecture and is signed Chikud Sanjin Saku (Chikud the Recluse). He was born in 11895 and died in 1966.

His work is relatively rare compared to other more prolific makers of the time although he did form the basket lineage on Sado island, his son Kosuge Kogetu, (1933-2016) went on to become another prominent artist.
