Object Description

The delightfully executed oil on canvas, painted in the provincial style, depicting a black and white hound in profile, the whole presented in a period maple frame and surviving from the turn of the nineteenth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Executed with a good dexterity and a keen eye for balance, the animal has been depicted with a friendly and calm demeanour. The Victorians adored dogs, which were by far the most popular domestic pet of the era, led by their much-esteemed Queen Victoria, the English found comfort from daily toil by returning home to their favourite pet.

The original condition, subject matter, execution, and style of this picture makes it a very desirable one indeed.

Object Condition

The painting is apparently unsigned and in un-cleaned and un-restored condition. The overall condition is wonderfully original, with craquelure to the surface as photographed. The frame is of the period but may not be the original.
