An Italian Art Deco Figural Alabaster Table Lamp
of Pierrot and Colombina

Inspired by the famous Commedia dell’arte, the hand-carved alabaster lamp modelled as a street lamp with lanterns suspended from brass arms below which the figure of Pierrot stands looking up at Colombina as he yearns for her love.

Commedia dell’arte is a form of Italian theatrical comedy that emerged in the 16th century, characterized by improvised performances and stock characters in masked, exaggerated roles. It spread to France and England in the 17th century through traveling troupes, influencing European theatre and giving rise to iconic characters like Pierrot, a sad, lovesick clown, and Colombina a clever, playful servant girl often at the centre of romantic intrigue.
