Object Description

The unusual zinc wall lights in the form of mythical wyverns, each with shaped back plates, with the beasts having trumpeted pendants dropping from their jaws to act as the light sources, both cast in two pieces and with a good established patina surviving from and the first quarter of the twentieth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The wyvern is a type of biped dragon or dragon-like creature that possessed two legs and often a pointed tail which was said to be poisonous. At present, dragons that have two legs and two wings are often called “wyvern”. The wyvern in its various forms is important in heraldry, frequently appearing as a mascot of schools and athletic teams. It is a popular creature in European literature, mythology, and folklore. Today, it is often used in fantasy literature and video games. The wyvern in heraldry and folklore is rarely fire-breathing, unlike other dragons.

Fantastical.

Object Condition

The lights would need to be re-wired and PAT tested before use. There are no structural damages. One of the lights has more wear to the surface than the other so presumably was partially exposed to the elements. They are likely unique and one would imagine they were privately commissioned.
