Object Description

The charming and unique blue glass wine bottle of typical form, with a flanged lip and hand engraved lettering reading ‘Blown by Joseph Brown 1879’, and the letter ‘P’ to the base, surviving from the last quarter of nineteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The script is beautifully engraved, and it is possible that Joseph Brown was perhaps an apprentice or some such at a glassworks.

The year of 1879 in the UK saw the start of the Anglo-Zulu war, the opening of the worlds first Christmas grotto and the longest ever fog in the city’s history engulfing London.

A lovely example of typography of the period and a thoroughly charming curio.

Object Condition

There are no chips or cracks to the bottle and it remains in original condition.
