Object Description

An oblong Egyptian scaraboid made of faience. The topside is vertically ridged, with some turquoise glaze still remaining. The underside is undecorated with a small concave hole to the centre.

A scaraboid amulet is a seal-type amulet which lacks the defining beetle features of a scarab amulet. It was used in much the same way as a scarab amulet however, to bestow protective and apotropaic properties on the wearer. Most likely an amulet such as this would have been incorporated into jewellery.

Gustave Mustaki was an avid collector in the early 20th century, and his collection came to the UK under Egyptian licence in 1947. Many of his pieces are in major museums worldwide, including the British Museum, the Getty Museum, and the Egyptian State Museum. We have purchased over 1700 scarabs from this collection.
