Object Description
A fine ancient Greek, Apulian, Xenon-ware terracotta vessel modelled in the shape of a miniature skyphos. The piece features a squatted ring foot, from which the characteristic deep, bowl rises, leading to an everted rim. Two d-shaped handles have been applied to the sides, sitting just below the rim. The vessels displays a distinctive black-glazed surface, enriched by two decorative friezes rendered in a matte terracotta colour. The top frieze depicts a meandering wave pattern; the curling scrolls interspersed with simple dots. Two thin horizontal lines sit beneath, bordering the second frieze. This depicts a series of stylised palm motifs; lines of terracotta pigment flaring outwards. Similarly, another two lines terminate this frieze.
Please be aware that the measurements given below detail the full width of the vessel, from one handle to the other. The width of the bowl alone measures 9cm.
