Object Description

A fine Ancient Roman bronze ring with a finely carved red jasper intaglio depicting the Roman god Bacchus. The band of the ring is ovoid and regular, widening towards the oval bezel. The carved figure of Bacchus faces right whilst leaning and holding on to a thyrsos. In his outstretched left hand he holds a kantharos (drinking vessel) and below is possibly an animal. The god has been portrayed in a stylised manner. The jasper presents with a solid colour with some subtle dark striations.

Date: Circa 1st – 3rd Century AD

Object History

From the collection of a Swiss gentleman formed in Europe from 1970-1980s; thence by descent from the family in London.

Object Condition

Good condition. Some wear such as scratches to the band and the intaglio. Patination to the band.
