Object Description

A very fine Roman carnelian intaglio carved with the standing image of a pantheistic deity. The winged goddess is portrayed standing and facing right, draped and helmeted. She holds two ears of wheat and a rudder in her outstretched left hand, and a scale in her lowered right hand. The image presents the attributes of several Roman goddesses: Minerva (helmet), Victoria (wings), Fortuna (rudder), Ceres (ears of wheat), Aequitas (scale) and Nemesis (Draped clothing).

The piece comes with a professionally baked, modern impression.

Date: Circa 2nd century AD

Object History

From the collection of a Swiss gentleman formed in Europe from 1970-1980s; thence by descent from the family in London.

Object Condition

Excellent condition. The intaglio itself weighs 1.12g.
