Object Description

Ancient Roman intaglio Victory ring. Set to centre with an oval cornelian intaglio in a closed back Roman set setting depicting the full length figure of the Roman goddess Victoria, the winged statue of Victory, holding a spear and wreath with the wreath glowing redder than the surround and a raised polished inner border, framed to either side with decorative golden granules atop integrated smoothly conforming shoulders flowing to a solid rounded shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 6.7g in weight, circa 1st century AD.

In the ancient Roman period, Victoria was the personified goddess of victory, symbolising victory over death and determining who would triumph during war. She was worshiped by triumphant generals returning from war but also played a major part in Roman society with temples erected in her honour and her image appearing widely on jewellery and coins.

This is a museum quality piece whose condition is commensurate with its age.
