Object Description
A fine Ancient Roman sardonyx cameo of a lion. Depicted in profile and in high relief, the feline advances to the right. Its elegant body and legs curve with movement with its sinuous tail trailing downwards behind. Small linear incisions along the belly and backside of the lion represent the fur of the lion, further enriching the cameo. Rendered naturalistically, the circular eye, slightly agape mouth, rounded snout, and small ear are still clearly visible. The figure is brown-black in colour, contrasting with the cream-white colour of the background. There are natural striations of brown and yellow in the stone. The reverse is flat and unadorned.
Date: Circa 2nd-3rd Century AD
