Object Description

An ancient Roman knee-type fibula made of silver. It features a sharply arched bow with moulded linear decoration along the centre and ends in stylised foot. A small applied acorn sits at the top of the bow, adding additional decoration. The bow is connected to a perpendicular bar which features the hinged pin surrounded by a hammered sleeve. The hinged pin is still intact and sits within the wide, rectangular catch plate. fibula features the original pin and catch plate.

Date: Circa 2nd – 3rd century AD

Ex Wiltshire collection of brooches and militaria, acquired 1980s-2000s.

Object Condition

Complete and intact. Slight crack to the reverse of the hinge sleeve. Original pin intact. Subtle toning to the metal.
