Object Description

A Fine Quality Mid 19th Century Padouk Wood Anglo Indian Lamp Table, With Well Figured Circular Tilt Top Having Attractive Foliate Carved Edge And Frieze, Raised On Superbly Carved Central Column With Stylised Carved Lotus To Top Of Tripartite Carved Base And Original Turned Feet.

During the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 19th century it was a regular occurrence for English cabinet makers to travel across to Bombay and other parts of India, where they would enjoy working with the wide variety of indigenous materials available to them in that particular area, of which padouk was one of the most popular and widely used.

These highly skilled cabinet makers would often take this opportunity to create more elaborate variations of the same items of furniture which they were regularly asked to make in a more restrained form back home.

This particular table isa great, useful size, slightly smaller than many of this type that which we have seen and be absolutely perfect in the corner of a room with a lamp and some photo frames on top of it, in the bedroom as a bedside table, or even for a totally different purpose elsewhere around the house.

It remains in excellent condition having been cleaned and polished in our workshops using traditional methods and boasts a lovely warm colour and patina.
