Object Description
This beautiful decorative antique Angora carpet comes from a small town in Western Anatolia, woven in Oushak, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora carpets. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Oushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation. This is why Oushaks have a soft loose feel and their designs are more often very open. The luxurious quality of the wool (for which Oushaks have always been known) aid the colours luminosity.
Using muted colours of green, pink, ivory with yellow/orange dyes. Antique Angora carpets are very desirable due to their subtle tones and gentle designs.
Ushak rugs and carpets were woven in the Anatolian highlands south of Istanbul where they used extremely soft wool and using the larger turkish knot made them weave more open designs than Persian carpets. They are increasingly desirable today due to their open designs and wonderful colours, thus making them easy to place in a drawing room or under a dining table.
