Object Description

1753 Band Sampler by Sarah Smithfield. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours blue, yellow, white, pink, red and brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-9 Verse reads ‘ReMeMBeR W>HATEVER YO>U TAKe IN Han>D THAT LeARN>ING IS BeTTeR> THeN HOUSe> OR LAND WH>en LAnD IS GO>Ne AnD MONey> SPenT Then> LeARnInG IS> MOST EXCeLL>enT. Signed and dated ‘SARAH SMITHFIeLD> OCTOBER 22> 1753’ and ‘ALEX dr> HOOD born 1794 5 july’. (probably signed by Alexander at the later date) A scattering of motifs, including diamonds.

Object Condition

Good. No holes. Some stitch losses to the divider lines, alphabet, verse and initials. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
