Object Description

1781 Sampler by Mary Stringer. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Stitched to linen with wood and brown paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Divider lines in various patterns. Colours green, cream, blue, pink, red and brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10 Verse reads ‘Praise the Lord o my soul and all> That is within me praise his holy name> Lord who am I or what is in me that> Thou should thus put honour> upom me’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Stringer Aged 13> September 20 1781’. A good set of motifs, including trees, rabbits, birds and hearts.

Object Condition

Good. One hole. A few patchy stains. Minor stitch losses to the divider lines and motifs. Some colours faded. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
