Object Description

An elegant pale blue ocean background on this antique Bessarabian Kilim woven around 1890-1900 in lovely condition. Stunning watery pale blue background, with floating floral design.  Also in the border you can see subtle changes in the pale blue dyes, the technique they use to weave allows them to try and create a water effect.  The flowers are truly beautiful using greens, reds and pinks.  Some old preservation to this antique kilim, but in general it is in good order.  Supplied with our anti-slip underlay this can be laid on any floor type.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Russian provinces as well as Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.
