Object Description

175 – George III campaign writing box (1795-1800) made of mahogany with extensive brass protective strapping, brass corner, brass side handles, escutcheon and top plaque.
The interior has secret drawers and openings and a replacement leather made to match the maker’s name.
There is a screwdown key with screw each side (one screw missing, one remaining) and an auto locking pull out drawer to the side.
The ink jars unusually have ebony and boxwood lids.
The lock is a Thompson patent triple lug, the lock and keys work fine.

Object History

The maker is Bayley and Blew of Cockspur St, London, boxmakers to Royalty (George III), nobility and officers in the army.
