Object Description
An antique carved York stone statue in the form of Triton. This mid 19th century English piece now stands as a hand carved torso, which was once part of a fountain. It could be used in an array of different ways for exterior or interior use, such as a garden water feature, lamp, or statue.
Triton
Triton, in Greek mythology, was a fish-tailed sea-god or merman. He was the son of the sea god, Poseidon, and his wife, Amphitrite. He lived with his parents in a golden palace in the depths of the sea, according to the Greek poet Hesiod.
Triton had a human body down to his waist, and the tail of a fish. Triton’s special attribute was a twisted seashell, on which he blew to calm or raise the waves.
