Object Description
Antique Cuenca Spanish carpet with a delightful and very soft palette, woven with wool rather than piled they are knotted in staggered stages. Handwoven in the city of Cuenca, between Madrid and Valencia, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries but also more recently as is this early 20th century example. With both Persian and European styles they are beautiful decorative carpets with subtle designs and tones. This carpet has delicate vases surrounded by scrolling vines in muted pale greens and blues, soft yellows and pinks there is a resemblance in design to that of a lotto design. The condition is excellent with a soft medium high wool pile all over and no areas of restoration. A very light decorative carpet in a hard to find size and natural pale colours.
Cuenca is a city set in the mountains of east-central Spain, east of Madrid it is founded by Moors, it retains its historic walled town with steep cobbled streets and medieval castle ruins. Cuenca has been famous for weaving carpets and rugs since the 11th century.
