Description:
Here is a very good quality antique English late 17th Century solid oak joined Wainscot carved high back armchair, in excellent original condition. The armchair is designed with an attractive high back, which incorporates an arched, shaped pierced top rail, boasting a central nulled lunette carving. Below the top rail is a central moulded panel. The armchair features down swept arms, raised on traditional turned supports, connecting the back to the seat. The armchair incorporates a solid oak seat, which is firm, but surprisingly comfortable to sit on, while the seat frame displays foliate lunette carvings. The armchair stands on traditional turned “gun barrel” front legs, with sturdy block legs to the rear. The legs are united by stretchers to the front, back and sides, providing additional strength. This armchair boasts the original polish; therefore, it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination. This Wainscot armchair is solid in joint and ready to use.

These types of chairs were usually commissioned for wealthy households, where they were deemed status symbols and used by the masters of the house. The presence of arms, typical elaborate carvings and the finest quality of oak used, suggested high status within one’s community. They were an upscale alternative to the more common turned country chairs of that period, found in cottages.

The armchair features a rich mid brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This rich original colour cannot be re-created if the chair has been re-polished.

This oak Wainscot armchair would look would look good anywhere, from the hallway to the living room. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
