Description:
This is a good quality antique English early 18th century Georgian oak coffer, of primitive design, boasting its original carvings, with small proportions, circa 1700 – 1720, in excellent clean original condition. The oak chest is constructed with a triple panel top, within a moulded and reeded frame. The front of the oak trunk displays a primitive design, retaining the original lunette carvings along the top rail, with twin inset panels below, separated by a moulded mullion and stiles (feet) of different widths – we think the fact that the front is not symmetrical, adds to its primitive character. The lid opens on its original iron loop hinges to reveal a spacious interior, which features an internal oak candle box and lid on the right-hand side. The interior is clean and dry and offers plenty of practical storage space. The Georgian oak coffer also retains its original oak floor. The lid is secured by a working steel hasp, striking plate and a restored working lock and key. The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet). The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor and the frame is constructed with traditional pegged mortice and tenon joints. Overall, this Georgian oak coffer boasts a stunning colour; as it retains its original patination, built up from hundreds of years of cleaning and polishing.

This oak chest would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed – it would suit either a traditional setting or contemporary home.

As the Georgian oak chest boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
