Description:
This is a fine quality antique English 17th century solid oak carved triple panel coffer, circa 1670 – 1700, with a rich dark colour and narrow proportions (3ft 3⅞” wide), in excellent condition. The coffer is constructed with a moulded three panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens using iron strap hinges, which we believe to be old replacement hinges, to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry and practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The coffer incorporates an old replacement working lock with key, with an old replacement steel clasp (possibly from the Georgian). The front of the coffer is profusely decorated with the original null carvings, below which are three inset diamond lozenge carved panels. The sides of the coffer also inset panels. The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet), which also boast inset scribe carving along the entire length. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a stunning rich dark colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.

This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed.

This beautiful piece boasts a rich dark red-and-brown oxblood colour. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Object Condition

This 17th century carved oak coffer is in excellent clean condition, considering its age. The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer incorporates an old replacement working lock with key, with an old replacement steel clasp (possibly from the Georgian period). We believe the iron strap hinges to be old replacements (again, possible from the Georgian period). The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are original (not later). Evidence of minor historical woodworm to the stiles, which has been thoroughly treaded (this is not surprising given the age of this item). The coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.
