Description:
This is a fine quality antique Edwardian Art Nouveau / Jugendstil influenced inlaid mahogany occasional armchair, circa 1910, having been newly re-upholstered, and is in excellent condition. The armchair is constructed of solid mahogany. The armchair boasts a shaped top rail to the back, including foliate pierced fretwork, scroll shaped satinwood marquetry and tin inlaid flower head. Below the top rail is a central marquetry inlaid splat, forming a stylised stem to the flower head on the top rail. Supported by straight supports to the sides, the back connects to shaped arms, raised on shaped supports, which secure the back to the seat frame. The seat frame features a serpentine design to the front, and the seat has been newly upholstered in a top-quality taupe coloured upholstery, with matching braiding, and finished with traditional hessian backing to the underside. The seat is firm – you do not sink into it – but is very comfortable to sit on. The chair frame has been professionally French polished, by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop. The chair is raised on cabriole legs, and sabre legs to the rear.

The armchair features a rich mahogany brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This Jugendstil influenced armchair would look superb in the living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Art Nouveau & Jugendstil Movement:
Dating between 1896-1914, the Art Nouveau period was known for women with long hair, flowers and curves, and so is Art Nouveau furniture. The Paris Exposition of 1900 introduced furniture styles reflecting what was happening in the rest of the design world, such as jewellery and silver. This style of furniture was not warmly embraced, as the sweeping lines were not very conducive to mass production. The French however, held it in higher esteem. Legs tend to be sweeping or cabriole.

The Jugendstil movement – meaning ‘Youth Style’ – was essentially Germany’s answer to the Art Nouveau movement and was prevalent in Germany and Europe between 1895 and 1910. It existed in reaction against the historicism and neo-classicism of the official art and architecture academies in Germany and Austria. The movement was so named after ‘Jugend’, an art journal founded by Georg Hirth, a German artist. The Jugendstil aesthetic was found predominantly in graphic arts, furniture and interior decoration, and took the form of a combination of floral decoration, sinuous curves and geometric lines, later trending towards abstraction and more geometrical styles towards the latter part of the movement. Beyond 1910, it was replaced by Modernism.
