This is a fine quality antique English single Georgian dining chair, solid mahogany, in the style of the Chippendale period, with a newly upholstered red leather seat, in good condition. Ideal for use as an office / desk or occasional chair around the home.

This single George III chair is constructed of top-quality solid mahogany and features a shaped top rail, with a finely executed pierced central fretwork back splat, decorated with an embossed central floral cartouche. The back splat is flanked by vertical moulded rails, securing the seat frame, which is decorated with twin-moulding. The Georgian dining chair features a drop-in seat. The chair frame has been constructed in the traditional manner, with mortise and tenon joints, finished with pegged dowels.

The seat has been newly upholstered in top quality dark red leather, finished with traditional hessian backing to the underside – it is therefore in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seat is very comfortable and provides ample support (you do not sink into the seat). If you do not like the leather, we will recover the seats in a fabric or leather of your choice (we charge £30 labour per seat).

The Georgian dining chair is constructed with moulded chamfered block legs to the front and sabre legs to the rear, united by ‘H’ stretchers for additional strength. Chairs with chamfered legs denote quality.

The Georgian dining chair boast a rich mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.

This Georgian dining chair would look superb in a variety of rooms from the dining room, office or library. It would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

History of Thomas Chippendale:
This chair has been produced in the style of the Chippendale period. The period, from 1755 – 1780, is named for the famous English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, who published a book of furniture designs in 1754, entitled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director. It had a strong influence on the cabinetmakers of the day, which incorporated the styles within the book into the furniture they produced. The Chippendale style contained influences from Roman and Gothic styles, including Gothic arches, Chinese fretwork, columns, capitals, C-scrolls, S-scrolls, ribbons, flowers, leaves, scallop shells, gadrooning and acanthus leaves. Construction predominantly made use of materials such as mahogany, walnut, maple and cherry.
