Here is a fine quality antique English Hepplewhite style Victorian mahogany & burgundy red leather armchair, circa 1880, which has been newly upholstered, in excellent condition. The armchair is constructed of solid mahogany and features a moulded shield back design; incorporating a central carved wheat motif pediment above five finely executed pierced fluted splats, flanked by moulded vertical rails. The back is secured to the seat by splayed moulded arms, raised on shaped vertical supports. The stuff over seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain burgundy red leather, with traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seat is in excellent and clean condition, with no marks or signs of wear and tear. The seat is firm, but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The armchair is raised on foliate carved cabriole legs, terminating on ball & claw feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear.

The Hepplewhite design was a very popular style during the late Georgian period in England designed by the famous cabinetmaker, George Hepplewhite. One characteristic that is seen in many of his designs is a shield-shaped chair back, where an expansive shield appeared in place of a narrower splat design. George Hepplewhite (who lived between 1727 to 1786) is regarded as having been one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Chippendale.

The armchair features a rich dark brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

The armchair would look superb in the office or boardroom. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
