Description:
This is a fine quality antique English 18th century twin panel Georgian oak coffer, retaining its original owners’ initials and construction date, displaying a stunning colour, circa 1720, in good original condition. The Georgian oak coffer is constructed with a solid oak twin-panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by traditional peg dowels. The lid opens on the original iron butterfly hinges to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry and practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The Georgian oak coffer also incorporates a working steel lock and working key. The front of the oak coffer incorporates two inset fielded panels interspersed by moulded rails, decorated with reeded detail. The centre of the Georgian oak coffer is inscribed with the owners’ initials: “M. H.” and dated “1720”, which is rare to see now, coffers inscribed and dated with their original owners’ details. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The Georgian oak coffer stands on the original reeded stiles (feet), which is nice to see; often they are cut down due to damage or wear and tear.

The back of the Georgian oak coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a lovely deep, rich oxblood colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.

This oak chest would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed. As it boasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

The coffer also incorporates a working lock, with working key. The coffer stands on its original length stiles (feet), which is rare to see, as most coffer legs deteriorate to the point where they are cut down in length.
