Description:
This is a fine quality pair of Chippendale style chairs, constructed from solid mahogany in the late Victorian period, by the cabinetmakers “Gill & Reigate of London”, circa 1900, in excellent original condition. Gill & Reigate of London were furniture decorators to King George V of England. The chairs are constructed of solid mahogany and feature a shaped top rail, with a finely executed pierced central fretwork back splat, flanked by vertical moulded rails, decorated with carved blind-fretwork floral detail. Incorporating a drop-in seat design, the seat frames are finely moulded. The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality structured cream silk brocade upholstery, featuring a cream background, with a pale gold structure and duck egg blue spot. The seats have been finished with tradition hessian backing to the undersides. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. The chairs stand on finely moulded and chamfered block front legs, with sabre legs to the rear. Chairs with chamfered legs denote quality. This is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from other sets of chairs.

The chairs boast a rich, dark mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.

This pair of mahogany Chippendale side chairs would look superb in a variety of rooms from the dining room, office or library. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.

Provenance:
Gill & Reigate – London antique dealers, furniture retailers and makers (fl.1899-1958). The firm was founded in 1899. By 1901 it was trading at 85 Oxford Street and described as ‘Dealers in Antique & Modern Furniture, Artistic Decorators and Upholsterers’. The firm were decorators to King George V. Addresses used by the firm up until their demise about 1958 were 25-26 George Street, Hanover Square; 73-85 Oxford Street & 7 Soho Square; Dean Street and Arlington Street; 31 East 57th Street, New York. Their showrooms were furnished in various periods and after 1900 advertised furniture in the Empire and Regency styles. Queen Mary was said to be a customer. They exhibited and advertised widely in publications such as Country Life and the Burlington Magazine. The firm designed and furnished the Royal Apartments at the Wembley Stadium for the Empire Exhibition in 1924-25. Later had showrooms in New Oxford Street, at which time F. W. Everard was a director.
